About the event

The theme of this ninth Cello Biennale is ‘The Cello Moves’. Silenzio is a collaboration between dance company LeineRoebana and cellists Ketevan Roinishvili and Lidy Blijdorp, who take this theme quite literally with music by Goebaidoelina and Tsintsadze.

Artist-in-residence Jean-Guihen Queyras will be performing three movements from Benjamin Britten’s Second Suite alongside his son, the emerging visual artist Jérémie Queyras, who will be painting live onstage to his father’s music.

And not one but two premieres in one day for Calliope Tsoupaki! Not only her new composition for the National Cello Competition, but also a special commission for this year's Cello Biennale – a piece for cello and piano performed by Larissa Groeneveld and Ellen Corver (partners in the Osiris Trio for over twenty-five years now).

The Polish Cello Quartet – one of the world’s most illustrious cello quartets of the past decade – will finally be making its debut at the Cello Biennale, performing Polish-French genius Alexandre Tansman’s.
